Lung disease is a disease or disorder in which the lung function is impaired. Our lungs are the open doors to life, providing oxygen and discarding carbon dioxide from our bodies. Since the lungs are in constant contact with both the outside air and the body's internal environment, the lungs are uniquely vulnerable to disease. Every year more than 349,000 Americans die of lung disease. COPD is the fourth leading cause of death in the US and will continue to be a major health problem in the future. By, 2020, COPD will become the third leading cause of death in the United States. Lung Disease (and other breathing problems) is the number one killer of babies younger than one year old.
Today more than 35 million Americans live with some form of COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.) Current definitions identify COPD as being one or more of these disease elements: emphysema and/or chronic bronchitis. These are often aggravated by asthma in many patients.
This site will provide information on disease symptoms; risk factors and daily quality of life care for all types of lung disease that may affect any one of us.
To broaden my knowledge about COPD/Emphysema, to bring awareness of this debilitating disease, and to share my knowledge with patients, family, the public and the media is a mission that I have set for this website and with my day to day activities.
"You know that our breathing is the inhaling and exhaling of air. The organ that serves for this is the lungs that lie round the heart, so that the air passing through them thereby envelops the heart. Thus breathing is a natural way to the heart. And so, having collected your mind within you, lead it into the channel of breathing through which air reaches the heart and, together with this inhaled air, force your mind to descend into the heart and to remain there." - Nicephorus the Solitary
"Inhale, and God approaches you. Hold the inhalation, and God remains with you. Exhale, and you approach God. Hold the exhalation, and surrender to God." - Krishnamacharya
"Smile, Breathe and go slowly." - Thich Nhat Hanh
"For Breath is life, and if you breathe well you will live long on earth." - Sanskrit Proverb
"Breathe, Let go. And remind yourself that this very moment is the only one you know you have for sure." - Oprah Winfrey
